Your Wedding is the perfect time to learn calligraphy
This may be a controversial opinion, but…
I actually think that the lead up to a wedding is the best time to learn calligraphy. 🤍
This was certainly my experience, but allow me to explain why.
Wedding signage is an opportunity to go large with your calligraphy.
Time is on your side.
After you’ve booked the venue, your vendors, and found the dress, you might find yourself with a bit of breathing room. General advice is that invitations needn’t be sent until 6-8 weeks before the wedding. This will allow you plenty of time to get comfortable with a calligraphy pen. All it takes is one practice session per week.
The invitations are the first impression that guests will have of your wedding. But it doesn’t have to stop there.
Weddings involve lots of written elements.
From the invitations to the place cards, to the menus and vows! Many of these elements require lots of repetition, which is perfect for honing your calligraphy skills. You can choose to hand write as many or as few as you’d like, but they are guaranteed to look gorgeous when you add your own personal touch.
You can get playful with calligraphy, in terms of both the lettering style and the surface. There are no limits.
You have a deadline.
There is an actual date that you’re working towards. And there’s no better motivator than that! If you’re anything like me, then you may tend to procrastinate and leave things half-done unless you have a deadline. Having that awareness of your target date will ensure that you get your calligraphy elements completed.
Calligraphy is like meditation.
When the wedding stress is getting to you, pick up the pen and write or doodle. Calligraphy is relaxing and can help to relieve stress. You’re also learning it for your own creative expression, so it could be the ‘me-time’ you’re craving. The flow of the ink and the curves of the letters are so satisfying, you’ll actually look forward to your practice time.
Adding your own personal touches to your wedding elements gives an amazing sense of satisfaction.
A sense of achievement.
Your wedding guests will be delighted to see their names written so beautifully. And you will be so proud that you created so many gorgeous elements with your own two hands. Handwriting is a dying art form and, by adding that personal touch, you’ll ensure that your guests feel very special.
So, let me know what you think - would you try it?
